Trail Mix – Mom’s Best Friend

By Marilyn Hunter

First comes hunger and then comes attitude. All you moms out there know what I’m talking about. Two hungry boys and one tired mom can be an awful combination.

To keep everyone happy, I never leave home without healthy snacks. Our healthy snack of choice is trail mix…perfect to stave off hunger and chock-full of natural energy and protein, carbs, and even potassium for important electrolytes on a hot day.

Trail mix is healthy, delicious and most important, it’s the ultimate grab ‘n’ go for busy kids and adults on the run. It’s instant energy. I keep a Ziploc bag of trail mix in the boys’ backpacks, my purse and in the car.

Making it, as a family activity, is a snap. Here’s a basic recipe for making your own.

Trail Mix
1 cup your choice of nuts, raw or toasted
1 cup your choice of seeds
1 cup your choice of dried fruit

Mix together and store in an airtight container.

We customize ours to each person’s tastes. Benny likes almonds, dried blueberries, cherries and cranberries, pistachios and pumpkin seeds. Nicky likes a pretty simple mix of peanuts, raisins, dried bananas and whole-grain Cheerios. I like dried pomegranate seeds, almonds, dark chocolate and crystallized ginger, while Andrew likes a sweet and spicy mix of cashews, dried mango, rice crackers and wasabi peas. Have fun experimenting with different combinations until you find the perfect blend you’ll love. The flavor combinations are endless.

Trail mix isn’t just for hikes and camping trips, but there’s something about it that makes you feel one with the great outdoors. I don’t know why. It just works. Don’t leave home without nature’s portable snack so you can explore more of nature’s wonders.

WONDERFUL! I love the ideas of mixing for the personal tastes. It certainly means less waste. That's enough different ingredients to start your own snack company. Thanks, Patsy

So true. It's also great sprinkled on top of hot or cold cereal.

I love trail mix, not only because it's easy to make, but because it's yummy to eat. :-)
