Super Bowl Sunday Guacamole
The countdown to the Super Bowl has officially started. My brother-in-law, Eddie, who is a 5th generation Texan, is staying home through the weekend to avoid the crazy crowds. He typically also stays away from the kitchen, but on this most sacred game day, Eddie ties on his annual apron strings and makes his signature guacamole.
He’s not alone in his love for avocados, though he calls them “gator pears.” Did you know that 53.5 million pounds of avocados will be consumed on Super Bowl Sunday? That’s nearly 6 ounces for every man, woman and child in the United States. It’s the avocado industry’s biggest day of the year. That said, it’s time to talk guacamole.
In our house, Ben and Nick are guacamole purists. They think I add too many goodies to my version and prefer their avocados smashed with just a hint of lime and sea salt. So we take them to Loteria, the corner Mexican joint, for their favorite version. Marilyn and I like to add a few dashes of hot sauce and extras to ours.
Basic Guacamole
4 ripe avocados
Juice of 1 lime
Sea salt to taste
Smash the avocado and season with the lime and sea salt.
Customize it with your signature extras:
½ cup chopped white onion
2 tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 to 2 cloves minced garlic
1 to 2 teaspoons minced fresh jalapeno or Serrano pepper
1 to 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro
So whether you’re rooting for the Steelers or the Packers, one thing’s for sure, Guacamole is delicious…and seeing Eddie in an apron is priceless.

Guacamole is the best. Just try it -- I think you'll love it. Just make sure you have great chips.
I can see why you're the "Guac Master." Sounds really good! Thanks for sharing.
You are a purist! Do you put any seasonings on the slices? Thanks - we are thrilled to have gotten Pressed.
I hope so! Can't watch the Super Bowl without guac.
Thanks! Let me know how the recipe turns out. We blog every day, Monday through Friday with new recipes.
Isn't it amazing how guacamole has become such a part of the Super Bowl experience? I'm craving guacamole, too! Thanks for writing.
Sounds good and time-saving. Hope you got your kit already! Thanks for the compliment on the logo.
Amen!
Thank you. Guacamole is made for personal tweeks. Let me know how yours turns out.
Eddie gets plenty of thanks when he sets out his jumbo sized bowl, but he'll be thrilled to hear his name is now known in the UK! Would love to hear about a British game day tradition!
How many Green Bays are there? Either way, may the best "guaceaters" win ... I think you coined a new word
Sit her down with her own bowl of Guac ... that's sure to mellow her out. Cheers
I won't argue with that! Cheers
LOL!
I have a childhood memory of a friend's dad sitting on the couch eating a "devil" just the way you said. I'm going to revisit that for next time. Thanks!
Thanks and cheers!
I know Eddie and the rest of my Texas family agrees, and the live in DFW as well. Forget about the Packers and Steelers, I say go Cowboys (next year).
Thanks for giving it a try and remember to taste as you go.
I like the chili idea, especially biting into a little piece of heat instead of, or in addition to, powder seasoning. Thanks!
Cheers!
You're welcome and hope you enjoy!
Wow, what a great idea ... it reminds me of the time I stirred cheddar and green onions into thin pancakes and used as breakfast taco shells. Your seasoning fits right in. Give it a try, but make the pancake batter closer to the thickness of crepes so the cooked pancakes mirror tortillas.
I think you've asked the million dollar question. I love red onion on salads and burgers, and it's certainly good in Guac, but there's something about the acidic sharpness of the white ones in the creamy texture of ripe avocados. Can't go wrong either way though.
Thanks for the note ... no special occasion needed. And I usually write "Guac" since I also have trouble with the spelling. Cheers
You're welcome, and don't be afraid to turn the TV to your favorite weekend show, once you've made the Guac that is!
