Six-second Videos and Other Newsy Tidbits

Twitter introduced Vine just over a week ago and at Special Fork, we couldn’t wait to try this truncated video format – limited to just six seconds long! The video is ephemeral; once you post it to Twitter, it’s not readily findable again.

In order to share our Vine videos with you, I’ve captured the original links from Twitter. Since Special Fork is about solving the dinnertime dilemma, we didn’t want to just video six random seconds of cooking or eating. We wanted our Vine posts to be a teachable moment.

These snippets don’t replace our lengthier Video Friday video blogs, but it’s a fun challenge and a way we can provide some mini cooking tutorials on Twitter. If you’re on Twitter, please follow me @specialforksndy (no “a” in Sndy) for more Vine posts.

Introducing Ben Mims, Cooking Newbie Blogger
If you follow Special Fork regularly, you know the drill: Monday is my post, Inside Special Fork. I’m the roving food reporter and I also inform you about new developments on our site. Tuesday is focused on cooking newbies, Wednesday is for singles and couples, Thursday is for busy families and Friday is when we do our how-to videos. Every recipe on Special Fork takes no more than 30 minutes of prep time. (Cooking may be extra.)

Finding the right blogger for the cooking newbie category is the most challenging. We need someone who is food knowledgeable and skilled at cooking. But can such an expert also identify with newbies to anticipate the kind of information and recipes they need to succeed?

We are thrilled to introduce our next Cooking Newbie blogger, Ben Mims, who succeeds Katie Barreira. His first post appears tomorrow.

I’ve known Ben over the four years when he was at Saveur, most recently as associate food editor of the renowned epicurean magazine. He moved from New York to San Francisco last fall, where he is now the pastry chef at Bar Agricole restaurant. He is currently working on a Southern desserts cookbook to be published next spring by Rizzoli International Publications. Ben will meld his culinary sophistication with down-to-earth, actionable ideas and recipes; he has many young cooking newbie friends to rely on as touchstones.

How to Cook from your Pantry
Recently on Twitter, someone tweeted that she wished there was a place on the Internet where you could input the ingredients you have on hand to come up with a recipe to cook. I tweeted her back: there is, and it’s Special Fork! Here’s the link to the very place on our website. Input your first ingredient in the box, then click on the gray tab below, “add ingredient,” to continue to add other ingredients you have on hand. Click on “view recipes” to check your results.

Special Fork is a recipe website for your smartphone and PC that solves the daily dinnertime dilemma: what to cook now! Our bloggers blog Monday through Friday to give you cooking inspiration.
