Wild Blueberry Season

By Lori Powell

I have the pleasure of staying in Maine for at least a week on the coast every year, usually in August. Wild Maine blueberries, if I am lucky, are still around for me to enjoy for breakfast, a snack, a smoothie or in a dessert. However this year, given how warm it has been, I suspect the height of the season will come too early and I will miss out on one of my favorite foods of summer.

All is not lost, however, as I came across wild blueberries at the Kingston Farmers’ market this past weekend in Upstate New York. If you have never tried these jewels, seek them out at your local farmers’ market since they are sooo different from the regular cultivated kind. In both size (half pint size) and taste (superior). Kind of like little pellets of the best blueberry jam you have ever encountered, but are so naturally sweet and just oh so good! No need for added sugar here.

By Lori Powell

While on vacation in Maine this year we had an unexpected and uninvited guest, “Irene.”

I have rented a house on the coast of Maine for many years now and just love it there for so many reasons – the food, the people, the gorgeous landscape, the lobsters and how peaceful it is…well every year but this one!

Irene arrived with bluster and some rain. But really, I can’t complain since the rain was minimal and considering what happened up at my house in the Hudson Valley (third worst flooding in the area’s history), this was just a lot of cool wet wind in my part of Maine.

Talkin’ Lobster Tales!

By Lori Powell

Yippee, finally on vacation! Rolled into Wiscasset, Maine, super-hungry, at around 10 p.m. Sunday night on Route 1…and low and behold, one of the best lobster shacks in the world, Red’s Eats, was still open with no line. (It turns out they stay open until 11 p.m. during the summer.)

During the day, the line can reach up to 40 people and take about an hour to finally reach the window to place your order. Talk about seeing the pot of gold after a traffic-congested, eight-hour drive up from NY!
