I’m always looking to get more fish into my diet. Fish is both healthy and can be very easy to prepare. Today’s recipe is a super-simple Steamed Fish with Ginger and Green Onions. This recipe only has seven ingredients and preps and cooks in less than 20 minutes.

While the recipe is easy, you need a Chinese food steamer which consists of a pot, an inset with holes that nests on top of the pot, and a cover. You put water in the pot and bring it just to boiling to produce steam. The steam will rise through the holes. The food goes on a heatproof plate that is lowered onto the inset. Then the pot is covered to capture the steam and cook the food.

Here are some of my other favorite fish recipes:

  • Tilapia Tacos with Peach, Corn and Black Bean Salsa: The zesty and colorful salsa gives these fish tacos a burst of flavor. You can substitute mango or pineapple when peaches are out of season. The salsa is also delicious served with chips.
  • Fish sticks in a flash: Try these simple fish sticks that will have you eating in under 30 minutes.
  • Salmon en Papillote: This simple, yet elegant dish is easy to make, healthy and leaves you with very little clean up afterwards. It’s easy to scale the recipe up for a dinner party.
  • Broiled Halibut and Asparagus with Meyer Lemon and Rosemary: It’s amazing how delicious simple food can taste when you buy quality ingredients. A piece of the freshest halibut, some asparagus and Meyer lemons make a feast for one or two.
  • Miso Salmon: This is a perfect weeknight meal. As soon as you get home, marinate the salmon. In the meantime, prepare the rest of your meal, then cook the salmon. You’ll be sitting down to dinner in no time.

Steamed Fish with Ginger and Green Onions
1 fish filet (about 3/4 to 1 pound)
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
2 cloves garlic, minced
Fresh ginger, cut in matchstick pieces (about 2 tablespoons)
2 green onions, sliced thinly on the diagonal

  1. Add water to a steamer pot big enough to fit the fish filet. Water should be below the level of the ridge where the steamer insert will sit.
  2. Cover steamer pot. Heat over high heat to bring water to a boil; reduce heat until the water is just boiling. Add the steamer insert.
  3. While the water is boiling, prepare the fish for steaming. Place fish on a heatproof plate.
  4. In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar if using, and garlic. Mix well and drizzle over the filet. Sprinkle with ginger and green onions.
  5. When the steamer is producing steam, place fish filet and plate into steamer. Be very careful because the steam is very hot. (See note below.) Steam for 8 to 10 minutes until fish is opaque. Remove plate from steamer and ladle sauce that has puddled in the plate, over fish.
  6. Serve immediately.

Makes 2 servings.

Cooking note:
To facilitate placing the plate into the hot steamer and removing it, you can tie kitchen string across the plate to make a holder – tie like a present, from opposite sides of the plate, meeting in the middle. Alternatively, use cooking rubber bands (regular rubber bands might not hold up in the heat). Wrap them around the plate to form an “x” and grasp the rubber bands by the “x” to remove the fish from the steamer.
