Learning to Love Granola

Since moving to San Francisco a few months ago, I’ve learned several truths already: the hills are torture on my Converse-loving feet, it will always get cold at night so bring a hoodie, and people here LOVE granola.

Granola has always been tied to hippies and nature-loving enthusiasts as their snack or breakfast of choice, so many would not be surprised that San Franciscans love it. But I was shocked at just HOW much they love it.

Everyone I know here makes it, or has their favorite brand. Being a Southerner, I never ate granola growing up, or even as a young adult, because I was nursed on biscuits with ham or sausage and covered in gravy, quite the complete opposite of everything granola stands for.

Hot Breakfast in a Hurry

Growing up, both my parents worked outside the home. But despite their busy schedules, they always found time to make a home-cooked meal for breakfast and dinner. For breakfast I especially remember pancakes, muffins, waffles, French toast and sunny side up eggs and rice with Portuguese sausage (a Hawaiian favorite).

As I get older, weekday breakfasts have become much less elaborate but I do try to make an effort. I’ve found two keys for weekday breakfast success: either make-ahead breakfasts like granola, or recipes with very few ingredients like breakfast burritos or healthy smoothies.

Quick and Easy Granola

Granola is one of those great foods to have around the house. It does double duty for me as either breakfast (with milk or yogurt) or as a healthy snack. Most people buy readymade granola but it’s really simple to prepare it yourself, and you’ll save money, too.
