Stirring the Pot

Since I moved this past weekend I am looking for some true comfort food. A friend once made me Scotch eggs on a dreadful rainy day – the kind where the cold goes straight through your bones. Scotch eggs were the perfect remedy. They were crispy on the outside with delicious, tender sausage cradling the hard-boiled egg. Truly a perfect protein package.

Like most people, I love Thai food. And I’m lucky enough to have a girlfriend from Thailand to show me how to cook it myself.
Kra Prao, a stir-fried mixture of ground meat, chiles and fresh basil leaves, is my favorite. I learned to make it from Lynn’s mom, who will be checking out this video from Thailand to see if I’ve cooked in correctly, so the pressure is on!
Food trucks are all the rage in cities across the country. In Los Angeles, there’s a food truck gridlock with offerings ranging from grilled cheese to cupcakes. But the one who started the craze – with a compelling taco, savvy use of social media and a dedication to serving healthy and delicious food to all people regardless of circumstance – is my friend Chef Roy Choi of Kogi BBQ fame.
I first met Roy at a holiday event at our kids’ school. I was in my chef whites looking for Ben and Nick in a sea of kids when I heard a little voice say, “chef, chef, daddy a chef.” I looked down to see a sweet little girl smiling up at me, and the telltale sign of a working chef … Roy’s black clogs splattered with sauce. The Kogi Taco Truck phenomenon hit many months later and quickly developed a cult following on Twitter.

Okay, I admit I have not been doing that much cooking for myself lately…well at least not what most people would consider a proper meal. Lately, it has been kitchen sink dinners (translation: whatever bits and pieces that are kicking around or still kicking in your fridge).
These bits are highly underrated. You will be surprised at how inventive you can be when you have limitations and with only a few good ingredients still standing. In my case, leftover ground bison meat (from the sliders I made last week), 3 baking potatoes, 1 shallot, garlic and pantry stuff….
